Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) – A serious medical condition

A large number of females these days are suffering from a typical hormonal disorder known as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS. It is a serious condition that a lot of women tend to avoid by not acknowledging or discussing it openly which can further aggravate the problem.

If you’re looking for more information about the condition, its causes, polycystic ovarian syndrome symptoms, and treatment option, this is your ready guide for the same.

Understanding PCOS

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome affects the women in their prime reproductive years and is a serious disorder of endocrine system that needs immediate attention. The condition is recognized by ovaries developing cysts or fluid-filled sacs of small sizes. Although these cysts are not life threatening, they can seriously alter the hormonal balance in the female body leading to several other problems.

Women having PCOS are at greater risk of developing several other medical conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure troubles, fluctuating insulin levels, high cholesterol, heart problems, and several other medical issues.

Symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Among the main Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome symptoms include-

  • Abrupt changes in the regular menstrual cycle
  • Enlarged ovaries with small follicles surrounding the egg
  • Excessive hair growth in body or thinning of hair
  • Obesity, acne problems, and increased androgen in the body
  • Infertility issues in several women as PCOS can prevent ovulation
  • PCOS is also among one of the reasons for white discharge in some women
  • Onset of depression

What causes PCOS?

As per the experts, the PCOS is generally associated with following-

  • Genetic reasons
  • High level of insulin
  • Low-grade inflammation (production of white blood cells to fight infection) stimulating excess androgen production that can lead to heart and other medical problems

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Treatment:

Although there is no definite cure for treating the condition, the available treatment options are largely targeted to effectively manage the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome symptoms. Some of the recommended options include-

  1. a) Medication to control diabetes: Since insulin level is one of the main factors that can cause PCOS in women, managing diabetes is the first step to deal with the condition.
  2. b) Healthy lifestyle: Adopting a more balanced and healthy lifestyle is another big step towards managing the symptoms of PCOS. It is advised to incorporate nutritious diet (a lot of vegetables, nuts, fruits, and whole grains), regular exercise schedule, and effective weight control management steps to reduce the unpleasant symptoms that can come with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
  3. c) Birth Control pills: Under the supervision of a medical practitioner, use of birth control pills also help in reducing the symptoms of PCOS and regulate the menstrual cycle in women.

Dealing with PCOS can be extremely hard for some women. It is always recommended to seek professional help on time to manage the condition smoothly.
